A quick snap of Jimmy C’s ‘London Cityscape, Dusk’, Author’s own image (2021).

Last week I met some friends south of the river, where I came across the vibrant ‘London Cityscape, Dusk’ by James Cochran aka Jimmy C. I had not realised this work was part of a series, with the first painting completed in 2019. On Jimmy C’s website, you can find see a range of depictions of the city of London in terms of location, use of colour, techniques and material. I’m just imagining some of the conversations that would be sparked from these pieces…

Beyond the notable landmarks — such as the River Thames and the Shard, or one of the many famous bridges — the city’s movement, energy, people and architecture were also of focus for Jimmy C. Speaking to how London is both perceived and received, visually and as a place. This is quite an interesting notion, as I sometimes find it hard to describe London in words. Perhaps, this series of work was an approach that recognised there were many sides of London to capture. Especially during a period of so much change — from Brexit to a Pandemic — that became a part of Londoner’s daily lives.

With lockdown restrictions slowly easing again, I wonder which London Cityscape’s you will be experiencing in the near future?

You can see more of Jimmy C’s work across London, in New York, Melbourne and further afield.
